Exam Board Guide
CSSE exams are among the hardest 11+ tests in the country. The maths is harder, the English requires composition — not just comprehension — and the pass marks are high. Leo raises your child's ceiling to meet it.
What is CSSE?
CSSE (Consortium of Selective Schools in Essex) run their own independent 11+ exams — not outsourced to GL or CEM. The papers are written by the schools themselves and are considered among the most demanding 11+ tests available.
Many 11+ providers test only comprehension. CSSE also requires children to write a piece of creative or persuasive writing. This is a skill that needs specific, sustained practice — not just reading comprehension work.
How Leo helps
Leo includes dedicated CSSE-level maths questions and English writing prompts. The difficulty ceiling is higher than standard 11+ preparation to ensure children aren't surprised by CSSE's demands.
CSSE maths is harder than GL or CEM. Leo includes stretch questions at CSSE difficulty level.
Leo's English section includes composition prompts to build the writing skills CSSE requires.
CSSE comprehension goes beyond surface level. Leo builds analytical reading skills from Year 4.
CSSE is strictly timed. Leo's timed sessions build the pace and calm needed for the real thing.
"Start CSSE prep at least 12 months before the exam. The composition section in particular takes time to develop — it can't be crammed. Start early, practise regularly, and the writing quality will come."
