Exam Board Guide

CSSE
Preparation Guide

CSSE exams are among the hardest 11+ tests in the country. The maths is harder, the English requires composition — not just comprehension — and the pass marks are high. Leo raises your child's ceiling to meet it.

Essex's hardest 11+ — and how to conquer it

📋 Format overview

CSSE (Consortium of Selective Schools in Essex) run their own independent 11+ exams — not outsourced to GL or CEM. The papers are written by the schools themselves and are considered among the most demanding 11+ tests available.

📚 What CSSE tests

  • Mathematics — harder than most 11+ boards, including extended problem solving
  • English comprehension — in-depth analysis of texts
  • English composition — children must write a piece, not just answer questions
  • Verbal Reasoning — specific CSSE format and question types

🏫 CSSE member schools

  • Chelmsford County High School for Girls
  • King Edward VI Grammar School, Chelmsford
  • Colchester Royal Grammar School
  • Colchester County High School for Girls
  • Southend High School for Boys
  • Southend High School for Girls

⚠️ Important: English composition

Many 11+ providers test only comprehension. CSSE also requires children to write a piece of creative or persuasive writing. This is a skill that needs specific, sustained practice — not just reading comprehension work.

Harder questions, higher ceiling

Leo includes dedicated CSSE-level maths questions and English writing prompts. The difficulty ceiling is higher than standard 11+ preparation to ensure children aren't surprised by CSSE's demands.

➕ Hard maths

CSSE maths is harder than GL or CEM. Leo includes stretch questions at CSSE difficulty level.

✍️ Writing practice

Leo's English section includes composition prompts to build the writing skills CSSE requires.

📖 Deep comprehension

CSSE comprehension goes beyond surface level. Leo builds analytical reading skills from Year 4.

⏱ Exam pace

CSSE is strictly timed. Leo's timed sessions build the pace and calm needed for the real thing.

💡 Leo's top CSSE tip

"Start CSSE prep at least 12 months before the exam. The composition section in particular takes time to develop — it can't be crammed. Start early, practise regularly, and the writing quality will come."
